With more than 30 years of artpunk ambient gothic skronking they sometimes stumbled on actual songs, some of which are here.

Quickie overview of a pretty great band - and one that followed in the Badfinger powerpop tradition of great songwriting and suicide. I considered putting "Kim The Waitress" on it, but instead figured if I was gonna include a cover it may as well be their version of Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song".

1. Valerie Loves Me
2. Very First Lie
3. When I Get This Way
4. What Girls Want
5. Don't You Think I Know
6. Goin' Through Your Purse
7. A Very Good Thing
8. Ordinary Girl
9. What If I Killed Your Boyfriend
10. Cowboy Song

Thanks.

Stump were a short-lived London oddity of Cork-transplant Beefheart-influenced ninnies presaging Primus with Jazz Butcher, Bauhaus and Wedding Present similarites, though sometimes leaning more to Monty Python's Mr. Gumby and an Irish Zappa. Only had one album, two EP's and a Peel session but A Fierce Pancake would make my Listmania for its front to back sustained bass guitar-and-pirates dark idiocy.

Game Theory

Image

The antithesis of jail, this is the sound of trust fund kids with nannies to wash any accidental stains off their clothes. The way Scott Miller's falsetto (and, no, not that Scott Miller) darts in and around the overly brainy arrangements pretty much guarantees that he thinks he once got his monger on because he got drunk on creme de menthe at a gaming convention. I'm actually a little surprised that I once liked this stuff enough to actually buy the reckids.

Also, as is the case with his work in the Loud Family, I've always found Scott Miller better at titles than tunes. The Loud Family had the great title "The Ballad Of How You Can All Shut Up" (which wasn't even a song, really), and Game Theory had "All Clockwork And No Bodily Fluids Makes Hal A Dull Metal Humbert" (which was even less of a song). Good for reading, bad for listening.

Yeah, I still like Game Theory. Don't quite remember why I used to REALLY like them, though alcohol and some ridiculous song titles probably contributed.

Has anyone done The Sound yet? Won't do one if there's one I missed further back in the thread.

I'm downloading this now - great career-spanning choices, love to see Villiers Terrace on there. Do you have Flowers - curious whether you decided not to include a song from it - It's not the greatest album ever, but there are a couple of songs I like on it.

I'd like to a few from some of Bunnymen's contemporaries (The Sound, Banshees, etc...) but it's all on vinyl, and I don't have the time to digitize enough of it to do these bands justice.

As much as I like Flowers it veers disturbingly close to Neil Diamond-with-better-guitar at times.

I have a bunch of The Sound albums on itunes I snagged from several blogs awhile back. Can put up a tenner a little later.

Wikipedia Wrote:
The Sound were a British post-punk band fronted by Adrian Borland, which evolved from his previous band, The Outsiders. Their career spanned 1978 to 1987. They were labelmates of groups such as Echo & the Bunnymen and The Chameleons. They shared stages with bands such as The Bunnymen, The Au Pairs, Comsat Angels, Felt, Medium Medium, U2, Public Image Ltd., U.K. Subs, Eyeless In Gaza, The Stranglers, China Crisis, Fiat Lux, Shriekback, and Aztec Camera

The Outsiders changed their name to "The Sound" after the departure of "Bob" Lawrence (Bass) and Adrian Janes (Drums), the new "sound" commanded a new name and after much deliberation in a pub in Kingston-upon-Thames they became The Sound in 1979. The Sound consisted of: Adrian Borland (vocals, guitar), Benita "Bi" Marshall (keyboards, saxophone, clarinet), Graham Bailey (bass guitar), and Mike Dudley (drums). The band signed to Warner Bros.' post-punk imprint Korova Records after issuing an indie EP titled Physical World on their manager's label. Colvin "Max" Mayers replaced Marshall on keyboards in 1981.
Adrian Borland's brooding lyrics often consisted of existential ruminations (e.g., "Counting The Days," "Sense Of Purpose," "Longest Days") and reflections on man's tendency towards self-destruction (e.g., "Fatal Flaw," "Missiles," "New Dark Age," "Skeletons"). They found the majority of their fame in the U.K. Holland/Belgium and Germany. They recorded several Peel sessions and performed the single "Sense Of Purpose" on the TV show Old Grey Whistle Test (circa 1981). Lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Borland had a nervous breakdown onstage during the first date of The Sound's 1987 tour, in Vitoria, Spain, at a club called "The End", this following a lengthy obsession with Jim Morrison of The Doors. The result being the cancellation of the tour. The band fell apart later in 1987 following a few lack lustre "contractual obligation" gigs in Holland. Graham Bailey moved to New Orleans, LA, where he lived for 16 years, returning to the UK in 2007. Colvyn "Max" Mayers died in 1993, from an AIDS-related condition. Mike Dudley is uninvolved with the music industry, currently a keen "biker" (of the pedal variety) living and working in South London.
Following the collapse of The Sound, Borland maintained a solo career for approximately a decade, and helmed the bands White Rose Transmission and the irreverent Honolulu Mountain Daffodils (in which he gave himself the humorous alias Joachim Pimento). Never able to conquer depression, Borland committed suicide on April 26th, 1999, throwing himself in the path of an express train at Wimbledon station.

Shortly before his death, The Sound's back catalogue was remastered and reissued by Renascent Records, a label which was originally founded to perform solely that task. (Thunder Up is the band's only studio album to not see reissue.) In June 2006, members of notable British bands held a concert called "The Sound Of Adrian Borland;" various guest singers who had been close friends with Borland (such as Mark Burgess of The Chameleons) filled in on vocals.
There is a biography of Adrian Borland, entitled (The Book Of) Happy Memories. In 2001, a tribute album titled In Passing - A Tribute to Adrian Borland and The Sound was released. Another tribute album is forthcoming, titled There Must Be a Hole In Your Memory.

I had a much longer Felt comp here last year, but here's a tenner overview. Jangle pop/organ pop gems with Verlaine/Reed/Dylan influences. Lawrence Hayward has a comparably weird melodic voice, more diction and sing-talking than actual singing. He can't really sing, but he sure can deliver a song. His later groups are Denim and Go Kart Mozart. He was a principal influence on Stuart Murdoch, which will intrigue some and horrify others. Martin Duffy did the Hammond before Primal Scream. They were jangle-guitar based when Maurice Deebank was with them, organ-centered with Duffy.

I'll put in kudos to Rads as well for doing that Tommy Womack tenner. It pretty much turned me into a rabid enough fan that I went and bought all his records and there's really not a disappointment in the bunch.
