The Star Room Boys

Image

I finally imported their 2 albums this weekend, and I'm struck by how well this holds up, overall. These guys were good friends back in Athens, but please don't let that dissuade you. They were the real deal.

Quote:
Amazon.com's Best of 1999
These Georgia boys have old-school country down pat, full of whining pedal steel, biting guitar, and most importantly, Dave Marr's tortured vocals. Not for the weak of heart, Marr's songs update the tear-in-your-beer honky-tonk aesthetic, but they have an emotional depth and sincerity that make them stick in your head. --Marc Greilsamer

Amazon.com
Somewhere between Dwight Yoakam's yearning twang and Richard Buckner's pained warble is Dave Marr's soulful and emotion-soaked moan and whine, used to great effect on this Athens, Georgia, quintet's sharp debut. The sound borrows heavily from the edgy and crisp Bakersfield style, with only the slightest hint of cool to soften the edges of Marr's sad shuffles and sadder ballads. With Philip McArdle's electric guitar and one-time Two Dollar Pistol Johnny Neff's steel snapping back and forth behind him, Marr dissects the failed and failing relationship across 13 straight-shooting originals that are wise enough not to even try to answer the title's rhetorical question. --Marc Greilsamer

So they only put out 2 records, and thus I realize making a tenner is actually more work than uploading their entire catalog. Still, these make for a fine 45 minutes or so of listening, so this still makes sense to me. So download it and have a listen, if you don't know them already. Listen to John Neff cut his teeth before joining the Truckers full-time. I'll put the first track, "White Lies, Blue Tears" up as one of my all-time favorites of any genre, not to mention the tortured, Sunday Mornin' Coming Down tone of "Cocaine Parties." Anywho.

Just got done with "Black Postcards," which is essentially a tour diary of his years with Galaxie 500 and Luna. Great read for anyone who's been on the road or dreamt of being on the road. Also, interesting for some sobering insight into the record industry itself from the salad days of the 80's and 90's to the tumbleweed town it is today.

Nice, I never thought of doing a Luna tenner.

I might do a Blonde Redhead tenner. It's interesting (or sad) that I probably won't include any songs from their last album, 23.

Would anyone like to do a nice Sparklehorse tenner, in memoriam?

So upfront, I'm asking a big favor. You may or may not have read about my harddrive implosion last week, but it did and I lost all of my music I had on my work PC from the last 4 years, which included my tenners for JJ Cale, Morphine and Silver Jews. I would really, really like to have those back. I know the link on the Silver Jews tenner has expired and will soon be checking the other two within this thread (EDIT: Yep, also expired). What I'm getting at is, whomever happened to download those and keep them and would be willing to re-upload them for me, I would be eternally grateful. Not sure what I could do to return the favor, but if it's music, alcohol or helping get on a list for concert, then I'll do my best.

I can hook you up with all the Silver Jews stuff that you lost. Just let me know specifically what albums, or if you just want that tenner.

Oh, it was just the tenner I was asking for. If you still had the 10 songs saved somewhere on your PC/Mac, I'd love if you could upload them?

I have all of their CDs at home in a box.

Thanks D. Are you going to Wilco tonight at the Fox? I'll be in town.

Oh, I see. Yeah, I don't have the tenner and would have to reassemble it myself from my own collection.

I didn't even know Wilco was playing tonight. Shows how out of touch I am with concerts and stuff. Can't really get out to do much these days, anyway.

Oh, definitely no need to do that. Basically, if you or any Ob happened to have the JJ Cale, Morphine or Silver Jews tenners I made saved on their PC or Mac and could re-upload them to the thread...

I liking this a lot right now. There was a song of theirs, I think its called spiderman, that was on one of your old mixes that I really liked but lost somehow. If its not too much trouble I would appreciate it if you uploaded it.

Luke's great. The record you sent me some time ago, the one where he's in a bathtub on the cover (sorry, the title escapes me... Broke Down ?). It received many spins in the MC household.

Thanks for upping this collection.

That was Broken (and Other Rogue States). A fine "wallowing in heartbreak" album - not sure why it got so completely overlooked in '05.

Ah, yes. Now I remember why I liked it so much.

Pffft, all the good shee always gets overlooked. I'm betting an Arcade Fire record prolly took its place.
