Housemartins

Catchy pop with a nice feel for harmony and counter melodies, the Housemartins could be described as a cross between the Smiths and the Futureheads. Paul Heaton went on to form the Beautiful South while, oddly enough, guitarist Norman Cooke would become far better known in the 90's as Fatboy Slim.

Zombeels posted this in another thread, so I thought I'd put it in it's proper home (sorry if it's a repost from this thread, I was too lazy to go back and look).

Sweet chamber pop duo, lots of cello, pretty vocals, lyrics darker than the music.

Had three albums before moving on to other projects. A 4th album
is due next month after a 16 year hiatus during which only a few tracks came out under the Shelleyan Orphan name. I only have one track from the new album so far.

RIYL: Sundays, Innocence Mission, Dream Academy, early Everything But The Girl, Cocteau Twins, chamber pop groups that sound like warm spring wind.

54.40

This west coast canadian band has crafted some of the best and most impressionable songs in Canadian rock history. They have often been labelled as the Canadian REM and judging from the songs early in their career, its a good description. Neil Osbourne is the singer and leader of the band. I drew most from their earlier albums as I think they are better than their most recent stuff. I think 1992's album Dear Dear is their best work. Do not let this tenner go by without at least hearing 'one day in your life' or 'one gun'.

I go blind (from '54.40' in 1986)
One day in your life (from 'Show me' in 1987)
One gun (from 'Show me' in 1987)
Miss you (from 'fight for love' in 1989)
Baby have some faith (from 'fight for love' in 1989)
She la (from 'Dear Dear' in 1992)
Music man (from 'Dear Dear' in 1992)
Book (from 'Dear Dear' in 1992)
Blame your parents (from 'Smilin Buddha Cabaret' in 1994)
Radio luv song (from 'Smilin Buddha Cabaret' in 1994)

Wire Train was a San Francisco jangle pop oufit respected for a short time in the mid 80's. Hung on through '93, never got the success of some contemporaries.

Some similarities to the American guitar-based alt-pop groups of the time that were the alternative to synthpop for many of us in our younger days, but they share more similiarities with Aussie and New Zealand acts like Triffids, Hunters & Collectors, The Church, Hoodo Gurus, Go-Betweens, etc., because there's an atmospheric shimmer to their jangle and altcountry rockin'.

Some of you many remember tracks like "Chamber Of Hellos," "Last Perfect Thing," and "She Comes On", which got a decent amount of college and modern rock radio airplay.

Their only mainstream recognition came with "I Will Not Fall" when it was in the Point Break film.

Snug never got a proper release.

My "play-zher" (as they'd say in Indiana). I am sure someone else could do one and would have entirely different tracks. Obviously, those are just my favs.

If anyone has much by Austin band Glass Eye, a tenner would be welcome. Used to play them a lot in college (especially "Treefort") but haven't had anything by them in 15 years or so.

That was the band that Daniel Johnston used to follow around right? Kathy McCarthy and company -- who gave Danny his first real break?

damn estone...weasel and neecie.

I drove 3+ hours to see Mighty Lemon Drops and Big Dipper play at University of Delaware on a last minute whim when i was in college. Drank myself silly and then drove back arriving back home at 6am still drunk and plopped myself down in front of the typewriter (yes typewriter, not computer) to start a 15 page term paper that was due at 4pm that afternoon. It was a piece of shit but I turned something in before going to sleep. Oh, the carefree days of college.

SILVER JEWS

Silver Jews is the music outlet of Nashville-based (as of 1999) writer David "DC" Berman. Early on thought of as a Pavement side project due to the involvement of college pals Steve Malkmus and Bob Nostanovich, who appeared on early (and awful sounding) EPs Dime Map of the Reef and The Arizona Record, which gave the band its initial lo-fi reputation. Malkmus/Nostanovich also play on half of Silver Jews' six albums (Starlight Walker, American Water and Tanglewood Numbers).

Having said that, it's always been Berman's project and it's his often arcane lyrics, evocative wit, clever use of puns and cliches and dry, sly and sometime goofy sense of humor that have defined the band since its formation in 1989.

The music, in general, could be described as half the time, a kind of laid-back country-rock, and other times, a disheveled rollock.

Code:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/cvwx44

No. Track (Album)
1. Trains Across the Sea (Starlight Walker)
2. Dallas (The Natural Bridge)
3. Random Rules (American Water)
4. Time Will Break the World (Bright Flight)
5. Horseleg Swastikas (Bright Flight)
6. Friday Night Fever (Bright Flight)
7. Punks in the Beerlight (Tanglewood Numbers)
8. Animal Shapes (Tanglewood Numbers)
9. The Poor, The Fair, and The Good (Tanglewood Numbers)
10. Suffering Jukebox (Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea)

Weighted heavily in favor of Bright Flight and Tanglewood Numbers because they are his best records, IMO (some would argue for American Water as his best).

RIYL - baritone-delivered dark, dry humor, slacker country-rock, occasionally revved-up slacker country-rock, countrified American Music Club/Mark Eitzel, Mutations/Sea Change-era Beck, Sebadoh, Pavement, Why?.

Gonna put up a tenner by The Call for those who like them or who wonder what Robert (Turner) Been from BRMC's dad's band was about.

Searching for their second album, since the first three from 82-84 have never been released on CD. I have all the other ones, though the self-titled debut from '82 took some digging to find.

Also, Michael Been then:

It happens to everyone.

Long before he was sound engineer for his son in Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Michael Been headed up The Call, a passionate and anthemic group with shades of The Alarm, Springsteen, U2, Big Country, Steve Winwood, Simple Minds, The Band, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson, Talking Heads, The Hooters with better lyrics, the occasional Clapton flourish. Might not sound appealing, but Been's baritone was a different beast from from most of the others. He was neither ironic nor overbearing, was neither Byrne nor Meatloaf: he just MEANT it. Though being bearded and chubby didn't help fame much in MTV days.

RIYL: War-era U2 mixed with Born To Run.

Self-described purveyors of darkgrass gothbilly, or killbilly, as it's been called. Murder ballads, both fast and slow, some classic country, some DBT.

RIYL: DBT (with a Soggy Bottom Boys tint), Reverend Horton Heat, SCOTS, Those Poor Bastards (with better vocals), Murder Ballads-style Nick Cave.
