LASTFM "The Harder They Autumn" RUMBLE

lowest score out. if you tie for the lowest score you're both out. trying out a new format for reviews...

R1

(Dalen) Immortal Swan - Artic Swarm : hahah, Dalen rarely fails to entertain me. Pretty harsh metal, which is good, but a bit too precise and sterile, which is bad. the vocals are laughable, even by the genre's standards. does not bode well. 2/10

(Drinky) Cul de Sac - The Moon Scolds the Morning Star : Very odd. Seems like it's influenced by Ennio Morricone and Bob Moog. Never heard anything like it really. kinda grating, but i like creativity. 5/10

(timmy) Nada Surf - Happy Kid : Yaay, one of those bands whose popularity and talent are/were inversely proportional....or something like that. they have a handful of better songs than this, though. 5/10

(wench) The Felice Brothers - Little Ann : dig the mellow melody. i like the soft, traditional sound of this. vocals are a bit past imperfect, enough to drop this from a love to a like. 7/10

(rads) England's Glory - City of Fun : Hey, those riffs sound like something from the Rolling Stones catalog - who would've thunk it?! ;). But the Lou Reedish vox draw a nice line of distinction. this kinda rocks in a nice raw 70s way, wish it was a wee bit tighter. still, not bad. 6/10

(two guns) Amazing Baby - Bayonets : sounds like David Bowie. the strings arrangement is cool, very rarely do i hear that work in a rock/dance song. might want to look into this more, especially if they have songs catchier than this. 6/10

(billy) Serge Gainsbourg - Vu de l'exteieur : I'm not really in the mood for this, but i like this dude. he's cool. 7/10

(shiv) RJD2 - Poorboy Lover Megamix : haha. 39 minute mix. luckily i like RJD2. i liked Deadringer but not his followups, but i really liked his Gettin Jukie With It mixes. 5/10

(e) Kings of Convenience - Peacetime Resistance : never really topped their debut IMO. however, this is very listenable, in a background kinda way on a lazy afternoon. 5/10

(rparis) Roman Candle - They Say : i've heard of these guys but heard them until now. actually sounds really good. chorus is weak though. would be interested in hearing their better songs. 5/10

kind of a ho-hum round, but i guess everyone is a bit rusty. dalen is out.

round 2 later today

Judging by the songs everyone played, I think I could have won with a 25 minute version of space. Way to Fail, though, Faily G.

R2

(drinky) Kinks - Come Dancing : Yeah it's late-era, but it still rules. 9/10.

(timmy) Toad The Wet Sprocket - Fall Down : One of their 5 great songs. I prefer the live acoustic version. 7/10

(wench) Spouse - Relocation Tactics : Don't think i've heard them before, but they sound a lot like many other bands i've heard before. i guess that makes sense since apparently they are a "collective" band with dudes from other indie bands. not too shabby, 5/10

(rads) Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit - However Long : Sounds like americana rock stuff. if i were to have a top 10 bands that this board generally likes and i do not, i'm sure DBT would be on the list. still this isn't terrible. 4/10

(two guns) Phoenix - Lisztomania : Maybe I should give these guys another listen, this isn't bad. i guess when i read hype about it i was expecting to hear some hits, and nothing hit me. but i guess there's potential, anyway. 5/10

(billy) David Ackles - One Night Stand : boring singer-songwriter stuff. pleasantly painful. 2/10

(shiv) Dan Sartain - Young Girls : Once again Shiv's music tastes never fail to creep me out. Vox sound familiar, and this is a nice little catchy nugget of americana perv rock. 7/10

(e) Minutemen - Martin's Story : This is the kinda of groove i've been digging lately. punk points! 7/10

(rparis) Iron and Wine - Bird Stealing Bread : Yeah, i like his style, both in terms of style and sound. i could listen to this whole album right now. i think it all works better that way. 6/10

billy is out. Round 3 sometime tomorrow, probably.

If that pisses him off, I don't stand a chance.

the wi-fi that i'm "borrowing" from my neighbor is a bit iffy. we moved into our house in august, but we've yet to be "fully" settled. R3 tonight if possible.

R3
THE ELITE 8

(drinky) Charles Mingus - All The Things You Could Be Now If Sigmund Freud's Wife Was Your Mother : Hmm, I like this. A nice roller coaster-ish jam of jazz, without being to wanky and unapproachable. 6/10

(timmy) Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Out Of My Head : Lousy radio pop sucks, even in Australia. 2/10

(wench) The Avett Brothers - Ten Thousand Words : Ok for what it is, i dig the sound in general, not so much the weak melody and the dragging tempo. the overlapping vox is cool though. 5/10

(rads) Gidgets Ga Ga - Dreamer : Lastfm says "gidgets ga ga bonds the razor edge of alternative rock to a radio-ready pop sensibility. Emerging from the frozen avenues of Chicago, the band generates considerable head via a blazing energy of pulse pounding tempos." bort says: the opposite of what that just said. 2/10

(two guns) Washed Out - Get Up : the music sounds like the band name. it also sounds 80sish. i've run out of good things to say about this. actually its a tad a creative, even if this guy just blindly hamfisted his way through Fruity Loops or whatever. 3/10

(shiv) Lightning Bolt - Dead Cowboy : This sounds good compared to the last couple of tracks. It's kinda crazy and spastic, but i'm ok with that. do all their songs sound like a yak shitting in a tunnel full of bees? 5/10

(e) Nick Drake - Cello Song : Ah, the soothing sound of Nick. i like his guitar here. and the cello. i've heard this before. a cover of this. who covered this?!?!?!!?!?!? i need to get more Nick Drake. 8/10

(rparis) Roman Candle - Why Modern Radio Is A-Ok : The vox sound like Jack White. Lastfm says "the singer is known for his loud farts." I was hoping the chorus would be better. this is kinda like a pandering reference rock song, but i've heard worse. 5/10

two giants of the scene, timmy and rads, are out. it's anybody's game!

José González did a terrific cover on that Dark Was The Night comp. from last year (this year?)
