Sometime next year, "Alex" should be finished, featuring The Cure, Donnie Osmond, Alice Cooper, and a host of others playing with the surving members of SAHB. So we can cross that one off the list.

So, who else is it gonna be?

Actually, there WAS a Martin Newell tribute record that came out a few years ago.
It was called Re:Newell and featured, among others:
R. Stevie Moore
and
Dag Juhlin (of timmyjoe's perrineal favorites, The Slugs)

I submitted a rushed, admittedly weak version of "Goodnight Country Girl" that was, deservedly, rejected.

Don't know if the CD is still avaiulable, but you might want to contact www.jarmusic.com to find out for sure.

I'm not really a fan of tribute records. They mostly have 2nd rate artist butchering the songs of a 1st rate artist. And I always fall for it. Oh! A Smiths tribute record! I must have that!

Once in a while someone will produce an excellent cover but by and large I wouldn't lose any sleep if they all disappeared.

The only bands I recgonize on your list are Paul Revere and The Raiders and Radiohead. So I voted for The Soft Boys because the name is hilarious.

Um.. the Soft Boys are Robyn Hitchcock's and Kimberly Rew's (also from Katrina & the Waves) old band.
THIS RECORD is a stone-cold mothafukkin classic.

EDIT:
I'm throwing in a write-in vote for Nick Lowe.

There was that Labour of Lust tribute a couple years ago, but it really sucked. Way too professional and reverent to do Nick Lowe justice.

There's also already a trib out there to Radiohead. And I really can't see any tribute doing justice to the Soft Boys.

I'd vote for tribs to:

Graham Parker
Ian Hunter/ Mott the Hoople
Dave Alvin
The Sweet
Stiff Little Fingers
Bob Forrest/ Thelonious Monster
The Church
Lloyd Cole
Ween
Steve Wynn/ Dream Syndicate
Ronnie Lane (!)
Slade

Edit: to add Slade to the list. That'd rock.

You know, I remember this now. In fact, I sent US cash to the address on Martin's website, but never got the disk, which is why it totally slipped my mind.

I imagine any chance of finding one of these is rather slim. I've e-mailed Joachim at Jar about this before. Alas, this and The Chills "Secret Box" will remain my holy grails.

Gonna go with the soft boys. They're underheard.

<--- slight preference for Can of Bees, here, but really, you won't go wrong either way.
