We met on November 13, 2003 in New York City at the launch party to celebrate the release of Alicia Keys sophomore album. I was there to film a segment for The View with a viewer who had won the "Star Treatment" contest. I saw my friend Anthony (who is my attorney's husband) across the room and went over to say hello. I actually had a bit of tunnel vision that day, because I didn't even notice the handsome man standing next to Anthony...and I started to walk away. Star
No...she was ignoring me. I actually saw Star at a social event 5 years prior and was too hesitant to approach her…but I was definitely interested. When the opportunity presented itself this time, I stopped Star as she was about to walk by me 5 years later. This time I wasn't going to let her go. I reached out for her arm and said: "You’re not going to just pass me by." Al
I was floored. I stopped, looked into his eyes and I literally heard a bell ring...just like my mother said it would. Al smiled at me and it was love at first sight. Star
Romance is in the air...
Everything about our relationship has been steeped in romance. On our first date, I presented Star with a CD of songs all with “star” in the title. Star planned a romantic surprise trip to Paris for the weekend for the two of us and I covered Star's living room floor with a trail of roses that began in the shape of a heart. Al
Al likes to surprise me and take me dancing to little out of the way clubs as well as huge over-the-top nightclubs; but the place never seems to matter to us...As long as I'm dancing in his arms, we could be on a deserted island. Star
Where we come from...
We share a southern Christian ancestry that is heavily rooted in Faith, Family and Friendship. Star is a native of North Carolina and Al of Virginia. Both sets of parents were dedicated to public service which includes military service, civil service, social service and public education. We were both raised in the Christian faith. Weekly church, Sunday school, bible study and attendance at vacation bible school was all a part of our childhoods and continues to actively be a part of our lives in New York. In fact our second date was to attend the 8:00am service at the Christian Cultural Center (Star’s church) in Brooklyn, NY. Pastor, A.R. Bernard and several members of Star's church family added us to their prayer list that first day. Within a month of meeting, we headed south to each other’s home towns where we met with both families and discussed faith and commitment for the first time as a couple.
Giving Back is our mission...
We are both very active in the African-American community and try to serve as role models for others. Having used our education to advance in our careers, we have dedicated ourselves to reaching out, giving back and extending a helping hand to others. To that end, we participate in events and organizations that emphasize empowerment, dedication and community service. Our social, political and community activities cross the traditional racial boundaries and our friends and associates come from varied backgrounds, experiences and walks of life.
Our Marriage...
We take marriage very seriously. We believe that marriage should be a blessed state of commitment, fidelity and love through God. Because of our love of Christ and our commitment to follow his teachings, we know that our marriage will have a sturdy foundation built upon the Word of God.
