Right place at the right time release but for me, this album is every bit the equal of anything Tribe Called Quest put out. "Cool Like Dat" was everywhere when it came out but the rest of it is just as good. Just a laid back jazz vibe throughout.

that first part of your statement is straight garbage.

Yeah, sorry, this album sucks. The single is great, but the rest is booty. Don't try to compare this to Tribe, dude.

And Pinehurst - that's a fucking awesome Surfers album.

To each their own and fuck you both.

I'm willing to bet neither of you have listened to a Tribe album in 10 years but keep living under well-established opinions of them.

I've listened to People's Instinctive Travels and The Paths of Rhythm, Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders in the past 2 months. All three hold up pretty strong. GWEEG.

And here's Gar repping an album with a motherfucker named Butterfly on it.

Man, those Dino Jr., Nirvana, and Pumpkins records were the soundtrack to that summer for me.

Didn't get this until years later but I can't believe we have gone this far with no mention of:

Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle

AMG is saying it was '94 but I'm with you for sure.

I did my due diligence. Not sure how they're coming up with that year. If you look at the bottom of the Icky Mettle page it shows all the different versions and the year they were released. It shows it came out on Alias in 1993. That's what Wikipedia has as well and multiple articles I found have it as 93.

First, prove all of this. Obner, Gar is insulting us all by lying to our faces. This was just made up.

Second, I implore you to have a cold one, GWEEG, and a back porch and give it another shot. I think you're underestimating this one.

Am I? Damn. Been pretty busy lately.

I guess I just fail to see the huge difference in quality between that Digable album and the Tribe stuff. In the end it's all "rap white people like". I just think they flow just as well. It may be a bit more backpacker-esque but it's got crazy jazz hooks from Sun Ra and Art Blakely and Mingus. It's just great IMO and the equal to the Tribe stuff. Maybe a hair or two under "Midnight Marauders".

I think Tribe gets the benefit of having the better career because DP's 2nd album wasn't nearly as good.

You're buying into the hype. A lot of folks I know who are into this type of rap swear by the second album.

I think you hit it on the head in your first post about this - right place right time (AKA GWEEG)

Tribe has much more rep than just "rap that white people like". Which, like you said, is part of the reason that the majority of their albums will always be considered better than stuff like "Reachin.."...They have the recognition and the career to back it up.

Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory have that real hip-hop flavor, it feels like a rap record...The DP record is a different animal. It has a much more jazzy, funky, laid-back vibe (that I totally dig) but isn't really on the level of the best that tribe has done. But of course, that's just my opinion.

I was out of town when this one was posted and never got around to participating...

Trash Can Sinatras - I've Seen Everything

Mellower than the debut but even better imo. It's wuss rock but some of the best and most melodic wuss rock out there.

Lloyd Cole - Bad Vibes

This falls somewhere in the middle of the pack of LC's catalog. In other words, it's really damn good.

Image

Greenberry Woods - Rapple Dapple

Harmony laden indie pop heavily influenced by the Beatles, Beach Boys and Byrds. Sounds like something I'd hate but I really like it. It's a near perfect driving down PCH with the windows open and the stereo cranked summer record.

The Iguanas - S/T

The Iguanas first record mixing latin rhythms with new orleans r&b and roots rock. It's still my favorite of theirs.

Gumball - Super Tasty

Gumball's Don Fleming is best known as a producer for Teenage Fanclub, D Jr, Hole, Sonic Youth, the Posies, and Screaming Trees, but he's a damn fine performer of pop/punk music as well. This album snuck up on in 1993 and remained in heavy rotation for years. Not many seemed to share my enthusiasm for it though as it was a bargain bin staple for ten years or so.

The The - Dusk

Probably their most consistently strong album. I can't remember the last time I listened to it but I played the hell out of it back in '93/'94.

The Muffs - S/T

Nothing earthshattering but the Muffs' debut is a good, fun punk/pop rekkid.

G.W. McLennan - Fireboy

Probably my favorite McLennan solo album. It's worth the price of admission for Surround Me, and Lighting Fires.

A Couple of Live albums:

Loudon Wainwright III - Career Moves

I probably listen to this as much as any LWIII album.

The Pleasure Barons - Live in Las Vegas

The Pleasure Barons are Country Dick Montana, Mojo Nixon and Dave Alvin. Enuff said.

Contradiction - thanks for waiting for my contribution before starting the next one. It was really unnecessary but thanks. Feel free to start the next one anytime.

i like that digable planets album, but it never held a candle to Tribe and time has only made that divide wider.

Lanois brought the clarity of his work with U2 to this fairly understated set of songs. It's not exactly Americana or rootsy, but it sort of is. The only of this artist's albums I've kept.

with exception to a few songs off Acadie which I think is a keepable album, I agree, this is his absolute best album and I guess not widely heard,

probably a top 20 of all time for me

. . . and "just trying to write it down while I still remember it" one of my favorite forced intonations on Lotta Love
