Panabrite: Nordsee / Contemplating the Observatory

New release combining two older releases on a single cassette. Some pretty great ambient, spacey shit here. Kinda in a Tangerine Dream sort of mode, lots of synths and textures. Bit of Kraftwerk sounding at points.

Lords of The New Church

Debut album by the first punk rock supergroup, consisting of Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys), Brian James (The Damned), Dave Tregunna (Sham 69) and Nicky Turner (The Barracudas). Definitely pulled the foot back from the accelerator compared to their old groups, but the debut was a fine record with enough bite to keep it interesting and a solid if more subdued rock vibe with a bit of gloom and doom hanging in the air. Subsequent albums were decent, but this was their strongest record. personally, I think live is where this group really brought the goods, but I still like to pull this one out now and then.

Linus of Hollywood - Let Yourself Be Happy
Nothing more of less than perfect pop. Think if Belle & Sebastian were from Southern California, and had less of a politics of sexuality focus, lyrically. A lot more playful, too.

Oh yeah, it's twee!

Every time I return to this album, I'm floored. Still.

This is becoming a Top 10 album for me. Really good. Kind of has vintage Weezer feeling to it in places, but also some stoner rock, hardcore and 80s punk tendencies come into play.

It is that good...
I still think in a few years, I will look back and 'Diamond Eyes' will be my favorite...

I love that Cults record. I'm stuck between that Mumford and Sons' 'Sigh No More' (again) right now. I'm really not up on many new releases this year.

Discoverer: Build A Base

This one came out last year, but I just grabbed it a couple weeks ago and now can't stop listening to it. It's a laid back midtempo mix of drum machines and synthesizers. For me, a bit reminiscent of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works, although what little I've seen mentioned about this one doesn't mention that so maybe it's just me. The press clip says Thick grooves, cosmic chords. Melodies materialize. Forty minutes of future spiritual road music. Probably about as good a description as any.

This was a cassette release, but you can get a digital copy or stream it on Bandcamp. Supposed to be an LP of new material coming out sometime this year.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra - s/t

RIYL: Tame Impala w/ less guitars, Toro Y Moi - Underneath the Pines; Lo-Fi-ish psych

(DW, this sounds like a lot of chillwave stuff that has been coming out the past 2 years). If you like this check out Washed Out and Toro Y Moi.

<-- love this cover design
