Yeah I saw a 22 of Brooklyn Black Ops last night but it was $26. I'm sure it's good and all but I got a bottle of Redemption Temptation Bourbon for $4 less.

Black Ops is nowhere near the price tag, IMO. Thin, unbalanced and boring.

Glad I didn't buy it.

Have you had that Dogfish/Bruery collab or that new Dogfish brewed with Egyptian hops?

I decided not to order any of those bottles ahead of time as I didn't want to risk it with the price point. I dropped plenty on Black Tuesday and Melange #3 though!

Stone/The Alchemist/Ninkasi More Brown Than Black IPA

I normally hate the Stone collaborations but this is dank as fuck! No doubt Alchemist is the driving force here.

First, even though this was just essentially people putting down the beers they were already drinking and trying other, better beers (This all happened during our annual New Years Eve...Day Party) it was pretty fun to crack some good shit, pass it around and act like beer nerds to a crowd that was half appreciative and half horrified. On to the pics...

The competitors...

Beer. Dark beer.

Our consolation prize for all our hard work? A 2011 Goose Island Pepe Nero.
Image

In the end, I felt (And I think this was the consensus of the 5 or 6 people who sampled both) that KBS, which has aged a bit, won the showdown mainly because the CBS was, in comparison, really sweet. Both are fucking world class and amazing and all that and I think I'd give the CBS the nod on complexity. But overall, KBS wins.

The Pepe Nero was also delicious and a welcome change of pace. We did not get the advertised peppercorn flavor at all, but man oh man what a great, well made beer.

I asked for a taste of this Flemish sour ale at my local beer bar (4th Ave. Pub in Brooklyn -- great beer & whiskey & free popcorn if you're ever in the neighborhood) and the moment I stuck my nose in it, I thought, "I'm about to drink vinegar." This is a lambic, but without all of the overpowering sweetness of the Lindemans fruity lambics (framboise, kriek, etc.), so all that's left is that sour, vinegar undertone (now just a tone) that you usually don't think about. It surprised me, and then I surprised myself by ordering a glass, and then again by really enjoying it. For something that tastes like vinegar, it's very refreshing. A recommended experience for the enterprising beer drinker.

Never could really get into the flemish sour stuff, but it doesn't make me want to vomit, so maybe someday it will catch me in the right mood.

I've mentioned this one before, but it is worth mentioning again with the recent reference to Flemish Reds and Sour Beers.

Verhaeghe Duchess De Bourgogne. It is an ale from Flanders that is deemed to be the Burgundy of Belgium. It is pleasantly tart, with a sour cherry flavor and full of vinegar notes in the scent.

Lemme know how that Founders Imperial Stout is. I saw it at the local store but didn't grab it.

I only had one, but I thought it was really good, I'd say comparable to Ten Fidy: thick as hell, nice bite, boozy.

I'd like to see it age a little bit as well--mine said it was bottled on 12/29/11 :!:

It should also be said that both Derris and The Cap'n get a nice shout out (from me, not Fail Bloor) on this week's Vesco Island Podcast

I went to the annual Lincoln Lagers Home Brew club Holiday party tonight.
It was fantastic. I only wish I made notes for all the great home brewed beers and mead I had tonight.
As for various craft beers I tried tonight:
Dieu Du Ciel Corne du Diable
Boston Brewing Company Infinium
2010 Bourbon County Coffee Stout, I've had it before, but the cellaring makes it a different beer.
Weihenstephaner Vitus
We also did a Yeast strain taste test with an American Pale Ale base wort.
FYI: We are currently the highest rated home brew club in the AHA, due to a best of show rating for one of our members in a contest.

FYI. Hopslam release dates:

Hopslam on draft: Jan. 25

Hopslam in bottles: Feb. 8

I talked to my local guy and he said last year the first batch of bottles lasted about 20 minutes and the 2nd batch lasted about a day.

Actually, they followed that up with this message:

Quote:
To our Hopslam customers:

Recently, Bell’s issued a press release announcing “release dates” for our Hopslam Ale. Although posted in good faith, the Hopslam press release had some erroneous information. Because of the potential impact of our expansion-related construction & the holiday season on our brewing schedule, we had initially created a relatively conservative release program that focused on a set of specific roll-out dates. Fortunately, we haven’t experienced many of the timing conflicts that we had anticipated in the brewing schedule, and we’re reasonably close to matching the release calendar of prior years. Unfortunately, the newly updated & finalized roll-out timing wasn’t passed on to everyone during all the activity here at the brewery, and I only realized the error after we published the release dates from the previous plan.

There will be no hard and fast dates for the release of Hopslam in 2012, but rather, it will be released on a market by market basis as has been our policy in the past. Because this brand has gotten so large for us, and given the production time to make it, this year the total time of release will stretch over a two month period, meaning that some markets will have product well ahead of other markets. And, in fact, some retailers in a given market may receive product before other retailers. We are well aware of the “fairness” issues involved in this process of distribution. However, I believe that this will be our best option.

If we were to attempt to have Hopslam released on the same day for all of our customers, then we would have to require our wholesaler partners to inventory the beer, some for up to five weeks, before they could ship it to the retail market. I found this option unacceptable as I believe that Hopslam should be consumed as fresh as possible. While this option would be fairer to our wholesalers and retailers, it would mean sacrificing quality in the name of politics. And in the end, Bell’s tries to deliver quality.

All of our wholesalers will receive Hopslam this year. When they get it depends upon the size of their order, our availability and the individual trucking schedules for each wholesaler. Shipping is NOT based on favorability. We will do the best we can to satisfy everyone, all we ask is patience on your part while we brew, package and ship this wonderful ale, while in the meantime try to keep up with our other production. Currently we only have so much fermenter space for dry-hopped ales and we need to keep up our Two Hearted brewing. We are brewing over 5000 barrels of Hopslam this year and it takes us awhile to get all that brewing and dry-hopping done.

I apologize for the false information given out earlier. The breakdown in communication lies with me and I am solely responsible for the error. Hopslam will start shipping next week to some of our smaller wholesalers, and shipping will continue through January and February. Thank you for your consideration and understanding of this issue.

Larry J. Bell

President

Bell’s Brewery, Inc.

Some of these brew pubs just try to make thing more complicated than necessary. Went to one I'd been meaning to get to, Perennial Artisian Ales. Turns out they mostly do the paler end of the Belgian beer styles, but I was tempted by the Brown Ale which they had to go an ruin by flavoring it with "maple roasted squash." Their Saison was good and they had a couple stronger offerings I liked OK so if pale Belgians are your thing, probably a good place to go. But please keep the squash out of beer. Nasty shit. I'll probably pass on this place in the future.

Hmmm. Looks like it's right there in Little 5 on Milledge between the Golden Pantry and Waffle House.

May have to pencil in a "wedding planning" trip to Athens.

You know, I'm curious how much the student body supports these places. There are so many places there now that are craft beer oriented whether they're bars or growler joints or restaurants. I mean, I wasn't into this stuff when I was there but even if I was I certainly didn't have the money to blow $20 on 3 beers yet they keep popping up.

There are more post college "real" jobs in Athens now than there were when we were there; thus the proliferation of nicer restaurants and more upscale bars.

Plus, I swear to Christ, college kids all seem to be rich nowadays.[/grumpyoldmanrant]
