Where does it sit in his legacy? What's it like?

(Strangely this is my favorite moment on the record. But it's so numbing.)
Neil Young repeats
"Got mashed potato, Ain't got no t-bone"
over his boogie riff
for like 10 minutes.

This is early 80s Neil Young. Hmm...
I admit that I like it better than other misguided affairs like over produced "Landing on Water" and RnB lite "Are you Passionate?" But still - In the canon of his records its only essential for the few fuzzed out rockers. I think the song "Shots" is pretty good rock. Pretty misguided on the whole... but while that's what sometimes makes Neil Young interesting, it doesn't make the album good.

From the era (and remember this is right before Trans - his electronic vocoder experiment.) I prefer his acoustic rocker/country "Hawks and Doves" from one year prior. Or Rust Never Sleeps - a classic.

Feel free to disagree...

I'd say Re*ac*tor is one of Young's lesser efforts. Totally agree that the highpoint is the 10 minute repetitive boogie jam of "T-Bone", which tells you all you need to know about the rest of the tunes.

I can't remember exactly how many albums Neil Young has (and I don't feel like bothering with AllMusic), but this is somewhere in the #17-20 range. It's not as terrible as Old Ways, but it's pretty damn bad.
