re: the mad elf
...Not a big fan. Though probably because the first time I had it the server got my order wrong and gave me the Hopback instead (which is always good) and the next day I came back, expecting something like the Hopback, and boyhowdy was I wrong.

re: The Three Philosophers
...Definitely a beer I recommend to my female friends who aren't big on beer. However, not a beer I would drink on my own.

I don't think i've had a pyramid beer that I actually like. Which is a shame when you want to grab a few beers before Mariners games.

I don't know the Double Bastard, but I've had Arrogant Bastard and I wouldn't recommend it for its price. Subpar and seemingly more energy in packaging/marketing than in the beer itself.

I think Arrogant Bastard is pretty decent and the Double is very good (have 4 bombers in my beer fridge right now). I think it's tough to find a really good strong american ale (lagunitas hairy eyeball is decent). However Oskar Blues Gordon Beer is probably my facorite. I can't recommend it enough (especially on cask). It is $3.99 a can so just be prepared.

Is your preference hops, citrus, bitterness, sweet, malt etc.?

Arrogant Bastards only run for $2.99 a bomber (maybe $3.99 which is actually a really decent price). What price range are you looking for?

You seem to prefer Ales, and you've already tried my favourite -- Dead Guy.

If you want to move on to Porters or Stouts, try the other Rogues. Mocha Porter and Shakespeare Stout are my favourites. Porters and Stouts are like the other end of the spectrum from Ales -- Ales are a fairly "light" beer (and by "light", I don't mean "lite" -- they're not "less filling"/"great taste" -- I just mean they're the beer equivalent of a dry white wine, whereas these are more like eating large Tootsie Rolls).

Anchor, perhaps? Their Christmas Brew is quite good.

If you're ever up Gaithersburg way, go to Dogfish Head Ale House and try either whatever is their current limited brew, or one of their more regular specialties -- good stuff on tap, guaranteed.

It's definitely not a bad price, but when it's on the shelf next to a Rogue for about the same thing, I'd take the Rogue every time.

A Rogue what? Certainly not Dead Guy Ale. Maybe the St. Rogues Red. Does Rogue even have an american strong? Do they have a double IPA?

Dead Guy is better than Arrogant Bastard, dude. Rogue has "American Ale" which is awesome. And is Double IPA grosser than Regular IPA?

Dead Guy Ale is a pretty mild non-descript ale. The American is OK but it's pretty mild as well. Rogue seems to play it safe and middle of the road (even the porters and stouts lack bite)

Double IPA is stronger/hoppier than a regular IPA. Both are real good.

I will say that i do like some of their beer (St. Rogue, Santa's Private Reserve and their brutal bitter) and i haven't tried their Imperial IPA (i don't think).

I just find it silly for someone to compare Rogue beers to Arrogant Bastard because Rogue doesn't really have a beer similar in style to AB....i threw out Dead Guy Ale because it's especially not close to AB.

I'm gonna throw this in with chilli chocolate as being a little too "creative".

I agree that they aren't really that comparable--but they tend to be placed near each other in the liquor store, so there's a price factor that my mind works through when shopping and that's why I threw it out there. My arguement is: I think the quality of AB is a little below some other beers that you can get for the same price. It's not a bad beer by any means but, to me, it's pretty mediocre.

As for Rogue, the St Red is fantastic. I wish I could find the Brutal Bitter around here more often.

I love most of Rogue's more traditional styles, but they get a little to creative with the majority of their other brews. I had one in one of their brew pubs that had a dill taste to it. Definitely not recommended.
