Stereolab

Image

Has anyone not heard Stereolab? I'll just throw in the usual descriptors: Krautrock + lounge. The earlier stuff is more drone/shoegaze, and the later stuff is more electronic/bossa nova/disco.

Anyway, for this I avoided any of the tracks included on the Serene Velocity comp so there's no "Miss Modular", "Metronomic Underground", or "Wow and Flutter" here. However, the mix kicks off with "Lo Boob Oscillator" which was on the High Fidelity soundtrack and is probably the most well-known Stereolab song.

The first few tracks are mostly mid-to-later period, and the last few are some of the earlier, droney, more rocking stuff. If you get really bored with this mix, skip to the last track. It's my favorite.

1. "Lo Boob Oscillator" (Refried Ectoplasm - 1995)
2. "Outer Accelerator" (Mars Audiac Quintet - 1994)
3. "Emperor Tomato Ketchup" (Emperor Tomato Ketchup - 1996)
4. "Margerine Melodie" (Margerine Eclipse - 2004)
5. "Fuses" (Cobra And Phases Group Play Voltage In The Milky Night - 1999)
6. "Ticker-Tape of the Unconscious" (Dots and Loops - 1997)
7. "Super-Electric" (Switched On - 1992)
8. "Orgiastic" (Peng! - 1992)
9. "Golden Ball" (Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements - 1993)
10. "Working Title (The Pram Song) (Seeperbold)" (ABC Music - Radio 1 Sessions - 2002/recorded live 1994)

This was a difficult but fun mix to make. Hope you like it.

You should rectify that. I think Nobody was talking about an LL mix in chat.

i started with stetsasonic on the last page. might do epmd next.

My one and only contribution has been Ice Cube... I am lacking in enough hip hop at this point to even do a single artist mix. I might could cobble together a TI/Jeezy split tenner ;)

my first contribution is going to be a de la soul one

I thought about doing Tribe, but there's gotta be someone here who knows them better than I do.

If i had the first three albums available, I could do a fucking awesome Tribe mix.

Shiv - I want that EPMD shee, fo sho.

I wish I had enough to do a Redman mix as well.

Joe Bataan

Image

AMG Wrote:
No recording artist has more impeccable street credentials than Joe Bataan, the originator of the New York Latin Soul style that paralleled Latin bugalu and anticipated disco. His musical experience began with street corner doo-wop in the 1950s, and came to include one of the first rap records to hit the charts, 1979's "Rap-O, Clap-O". In between these milestones, he recorded classic albums like St. Latin's Day Massacre, a perennial favorite in the salsa market, Salsoul, which gave the record label its name and helped spark the national explosion of urban dance music, and Afrofilipino, which included one of the very earliest New York disco hits, an instrumental version of Gil Scott Heron's "The Bottle".

Born Peter Nitollano, of African-American/Filipino parents, Joe Bataan grew up in Spanish Harlem, where he ran with Puerto Rican gangs and absorbed R&B, Afro-Cuban and Afro-Rican musical influences. His music career followed a pair of stints in Coxsackie State Prison. Self taught on the piano, he organized his first band in 1965 and scored his first recording success in 1967 with "Gypsy Woman" on Fania Records, . The tune was a hit with the New York Latin market despite the English lyrics sung by Joe, and exemplified the nascent Latin Soul sound. In early anticipation of the disco formula, "Gypsy Woman" created dance energy by alternating what was fundamentally a pop-soul tune with a break featuring double timed hand claps, . Joe would take this tendency even further on his influential Salsoul, which fused funk and latin influences in slick yet soulful orchestrations. Salsoul remains influential as a rare groove cult item, but pointed to the future at the time of its release. The LP embodied the artist's highly deliberate and culturally aware musical concept. Bataan theorized the '70s next big thing as a hybrid: an Afro Cuban rhythm section playing Brazilian influenced patterns over orchestral funk. In many ways, his vision was on the money, though most of the money would go to others, and mainstream stardom would elude him. He did, however, get in on the ground floor of the new trend as an early hit maker. His biggest commercial move was a Salsoul production released under the Epic umbrella, and promoted to the new disco market as Afrofilipino, which included 1975's "The Bottle", a much anthologized classic that drives an R&B horn arrangment with a relentless piano montuno.

Always in touch with the street, Joe Bataan picked up on rap very early in the game. His minor rap hit, "Rap-O, Clap-O" was a bit more successful in Europe than in the States, and is remembered as rap's debut in the European market. Nevertheless, his legacy remains his gritty and realistic Latin soul lyrics, his self identification as an "Ordinary Guy", and his highly personal and prophetic merger of Latin and soul influences.

1. Special Girl (Subway Joe)
2. Gypsy Woman (Gypsy Woman)
3. My Cloud (Riot)
4. Mi Nube (Salsoul)
5. Johnny (Salsoul
6. Ordinary Guy (Afro Filipino)
7. I See Your Hiney (Mestizo)
8. Mestizo II (II)
9. Call My Name (Call My Name)
10. Chick-A-Boom (Call My Name)

The first three songs showcase his doo wop influences. The next three come from the period where he started blending soul with latin rhythms. The next two are from the disco years and especially in the case of "I See Your Hiney" have a high cheese factor. The last two are from his 2005 comeback album.

RIYL: Doo Wop, the Fania style Spanish Harlem sound, slow grooves and great vocals.

This band was instrumental in my musical development. Probably too simplistic for most people here, I personally find their songs to be pretty ace. Understands atmosphere and how to utilize a voice. The lead singer kind of reminds me of Henry Rollins from an attitude perspective, not sound. Also, when I first came to this board I thought of track 8 for probably-obvious reasons.

And, one more just to show there is no rhyme nor reason to my musical tastes, here's my favorite Western Swing artist. He's famous in some circles for his instrumental tracks featuring some fine fiddle playing, but this set leans more heavily on the vocal tracks which I tend to prefer.

And, in case you didn't know, ol' Spade was actually convicted of stomping and strangling his wife to death. He died backstage after his first public performance in over a decade upon his release.

Sufjan Stevens

This guy knows how to write a song. In a very overblown, more-than-you-needed-to-know way. Yet somehow it works... and works well. RIYL orchestrated singer/songwriters.

Well hell's bells, I had no idea they had more than the two albums. Though the lack of Songs in the Key of Chance is disconcerting. Also, don't see Sufjan Stevens as a RIYL. Still, I'll be DLing this to see if Sunset Studies is an album I ought to acquire.

Songs In The Key Of Chance made it to my final 15. I read a review that compared them to Sufjan Stevens and a friend commented on one of their songs sounding like Sufjan (the music, not the voice).
