Had the flower power the other week on tap for the first time and it may be my 2nd favorite ipa right after Stone. Some real good stuff. I always like a good pilsner, and the sly fox never disappoints .. The drinking starts at 1pm est when the Flyers game starts..I'll probably be passed out by 10:30...God I'm getting old.

I think thats why I liked it. Definitely akin to a cask beer, but with more carbonation. I think someone hit it on the nose when they said, it tasted like alcohol-soaked cherries.

Recent beers...

Pike - Auld Acquaintance Hoppy Holiday Ale
This was much better than I expected. If you've ever liked a holiday-style beer, with some spices and such, you might well like this. It was balanced, with no overwhelming Nutmeg Cookie presence to destroy your ability to simply enjoy a beer. They seem to know when to say when. Well done and on sale!

Image

Goose Island - Bourbon County Stout
Holy fuck. Daddy like. As soon as you pour it, the smell of bourbon and oak jumps out and makes itself known. The stout itself is well-made too, incredibly thick and creamy. But it's that aging that really makes this something worth seeking out... I really, really enjoyed this in a way I haven't with other beers in some time. I made a mistake, though. We had two friends over saturday night to sit around and play a board game (while we took turns putting the baby back down, though she was in fact unusually good, which was killer). So they told us about a bar they'd found with "lots of really good beer!" I took this to mean "we really like beer," so I offered to crack open something special for them (ie this bottle). They took me up on it, so I busted out 3 glasses and poured them evenly. He took one sip and put it aside, where it sat neglected and lonely on the table top, tantalizingly out of my stumpy little arm's reach, for the next hour and a half. She took two sips, said "whooo!" and let hers sit for an hour. Eventually he passed his to her, and she finished both slowly, with some effort. To give him something to drink, I quickly chilled down some of my private Wisconsin stash, which he enjoyed. I could've wept. Sunday I went out and got another bottle and vowed not to share that fucker unless it's with Neuro or Shiv. Gottdammity this was a good beer.

Geary's - Hampshire Special Ale
Picked up a mixed 12 pack from Maine's perennially solid brewery Geary's. They've never wowed me, but they've never let me down either. This flavor was new to me, and it was a very good surprise. It's caramely but has a sharp bitter head to it. Not overwhelming, but just right. This is what it tastes like when you only hop early, instead of early and late. The longer you let the hops boil, the more of the green, floral, juicy wet flavor boils off, leaving just the bitter alpha acids. Think of a british Special Bitter compared to Sierra Nevada IPA. So this has that bitter background note standing up all alone against a very round, sweet malty character, and nothing in between. It's interesting, and I dug it. Also it tastes like it's at about 6%, but they don't give you shit for info on the label (pet peeve... tell me something dammit). I would buy these all on their own, and put them much in the same category as my beloved Long Trail Double Bag, only this has more hops and slightly less booze.

I wish they carried Goose Island around here. Heard good things about it, but have yet to try any of their stuff.

Bottles: Censored (aka The Kronic), Lucky 13 Mondo Large Red Ale, Imperial Red Ale, 2009 Correction Ale, Maximus, A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, Ruben & The Jets, 2008 Cappuccino Stout, 2008 Brown Shugga’.

Moylan's Tipperary Pale Ale

Second time I've had a bottle of this. I liked it a lot better than the first time I had it. Has more of a malted flavor than I normally like but it really hit the spot last at about 10.

But after about 4 I think my tastebuds would be pleasantly ruined.

Had one of these last night at trivia - Steelhead Double IPA. First time I've had a beer by this brewery out of California. It was decent, not overly hoppy and I couldn't tell it was 8.6%

I've seen those here at the sto but they're incredibly pricey somehow. Worth it?

It was a $3 special at trivia. I'd consider buying a sixer if it was $10 or less.

I wanna say the 6 packs here are over $10. Like $12.50 or something, when Sam Adams price bracket beers are about $9.

Tonight features a growler of Blue Hills IPA. I'm thinking I should've walked the extra mile to get something with more bite.

I find such levels of hoppiness offensive. I can't wait for the hoppy beer craze to stop.

It's not ALL I love, but I sure as shit love it once in awhile. And I am not disputing the craze aspect. But man, that's some good shit right there.

I don't want the super hoppy stuff often, but I do like it sometimes. I have 2x 120 Minute IPA's in the fridge now, as a matter of fact.

I like some hoppy beers, but I think I'm starting to feel a backlash to it. The beer game is all gimicks now. Each brewery is trying to either out-hop or out-add-strange-flavors-to-the-mix each other. It's all kind of silly. I'm feeling more honest well balanced beers these days.

The pendulum has completely swung too far from the favorless beers of America's past.
